Writing Desk

c. 1785
Attributed to Adam Weisweiler (French, 1744–1820) Plaque originally modeled by John Flaxman, Sr. (English, 1726–1795) Plaque made by the Wedgwood factory, Etruria, England (1759–present)
The Wedgwood plaque adorning this writing desk represents the late eighteenth-century French fascination with all things English. Dominique Daguerre, a well-known Parisian dealer and importer of Wedgwood medallions, was well acquainted with the fashion and may have commissioned this desk and provided the German furniture-maker Adam Weisweiler with the English-made plaque.
