Work Table

1810-1820
Attributed to Joseph Beale (American, 1774–1841)
This work table is part of a group of platform-base tables with lyre supports, saber legs, veneered surfaces, and gilded brass fittings imported from England. One of the tables in the group retains part of a label that most likely is that of Michel Bouvier, the French-trained Philadelphia cabinetmaker who counted among his clients Napolean Bonaparte's brother, Joseph, and the richest man in the United States at the time, Stephen Girard.
