Seven Centuries of Creativity
The European Painting and Sculpture department manages a collection of approximately 4,000 works dating from 1300 to 1950. Areas of particular strength include early Netherlandish and Italian paintings, seventeenth-century Dutch paintings, and British art. Other highlights include Latin American and modern Mexican art as well as portrait miniatures and waxes. Thanks to generations of Philadelphia collectors, the museum’s holdings of Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and Modern Art are especially noteworthy and include significant holdings of work by Mary Cassatt, Paul Cézanne, Marcel Duchamp, and Auguste Rodin.
