1887
Kano Hōgai (Japanese, 1828–1888)
Kano Hōgai trained withJapan’s influential Kano school of painters, who worked for Japan’s military rulers for more than four hundred years. He learned about the Western realistic style through art historian Ernest Fenollosa, one of his closest friends and patrons. Here you can see new influences at work, especially in Hōgai’s depiction of the pheasant’s feathers.
