Atomi Kakei founded the Atomi School in Tokyo in 1875. This painting probably appeared at an exhibition in 1890. Atomi’s inspiration for the scene came from this haiku by Japanese poet Masaoka Shiki:
Cedar in morning mist-
leaning against it,
a maple tree
