Fisherman in Mountains

19th century
Artist/maker unknown, Japanese
The theme of the scholar-recluse fishing was one dear to the hearts of Chinese painters, and one that Japanese artists readily adopted. Fishing was traditionally regarded by Chinese literati as one of the Four Pleasures (the others being plowing, wood gathering, and reading). The scholar-fisherman represents the pure, disinterested literati who retreat from the world of politics and fame to meditate and improve themselves.
