Cruet Stand

Workshop of Samuel Wood (English (active London), c. 1704–1794)
The large number of extant casters (containers, often with perforated tops, that hold seasonings) and cruets (glass bottles used to hold condiments) bearing Samuel Wood's mark indicates that his workshop specialized in these forms. This sort of specialization was not uncommon in the silver industry in eighteenth-century England. Wood served an apprenticeship with a well-known caster maker, Thomas Bamford, and in turn he was master of two other specialist caster makers, Jabez Daniell and Robert Piercy. The stand and casters bear the crest of Lardner/Branson.
