Woman's Cocktail Dress

1955
Designed by James Galanos (American, 1924–2016) Worn by Mrs. H. Michael Cline (American)
Galanos was known for his extravagant use of fabric during the 1950s: yards of chiffon or paper taffeta were gathered or pleated into his swirling ballerina-length skirts. In this example, shortened by the wearer, Galanos gathers the fullness of the skirt at the hipline to create a peplum effect below the waist that both elongates the silhouette and helps reduce the bulky appearance of the mass of fabric.
