Woman's Cocktail Dress

Fall 1959
Designed by James Galanos (American, 1924–2016)
This dress, with its vertically ruffled skirt made with bias-cut strips of fabric, illustrates Galanos's masterful use of chiffon. Although it is one of the most difficult fabrics to work with, chiffon became a Galanos signature for his most elegant cocktail and evening dresses. His prodigious use of the textile is said to have single-handedly revived the French chiffon weaving industry after World War II.
