Seven Star Buddha and Attendants

Late 19th - early 20th century
Artist/maker unknown, Korean
This painting represents the Seven Star Buddha—the Buddha of Flaming Abundant Brightness—surrounded by seven standing Buddhas who are the cosmic representation of the seven stars of the Big Dipper. A particular feature of this work is that the seven Buddhas are identified by inscriptions written in the Korean language Hangeul on the borders of their robes.
