Buddha, Bodhisattvas, and Arhats

19th century
Artist/maker unknown, Korean
This painting features Shakyamuni Buddha, the historical Buddha, in the center. He is flanked by two companion bodhisattvas (enlightened deities who choose to stay in this world to save mankind), an assembly of sixteen arhats (disciples of Buddha), and in the far background the messengers Gamjae and Jikbu from the underworld. This image may once have been enshrined in the main altar of Eungjin-jeon Hall, a building that houses images of arhats.
