Portrait of Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946)

1925
Arnold Rönnebeck (American (born Germany), 1885–1947) Portrait of Alfred Stieglitz (American, 1864–1946)
Shortly after his arrival in New York in 1922, the German-born sculptor Arnold Rönnebeck became part of the circle of artists associated with the photographer and gallery owner Alfred Stieglitz, which included John Marin, Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, Charles Demuth, Paul Strand, and Georgia O'Keeffe. As a personal friend of Stieglitz, Rönnebeck was invited to spend a week of the summer of 1924 at Stieglitz's family compound in Lake George, New York, and in March 1925 Stieglitz asked him to write part of the catalogue for an exhibition of his own photographs and those of others in his circle at the Anderson Galleries in New York. This strong Cubistic portrait of the sixty-one-year-old Stieglitz was done at that time, shortly before Rönnebeck left New York permanently to become the director of a museum in Denver, Colorado.
