The Cook

c. 1898-1899
Édouard Vuillard (French, 1868–1940) Published by Ambroise Vollard, Paris (1867–1939)
Seven of the lithographs in Vuillard's Paysages et Intérieurs album are views of the flat the artist shared with his mother, seen here in her kitchen wiping dinner plates (the double sink is still full of dishwater). Vuillard echoed the pattern of his mother's blouse on the tiled counter top, and affectionately repeated the rotundity of her figure in a stack of pots and pans.
