Vajra Ritual Scepter

c. 19th century
Artist/maker unknown, Tibetan
The vajra scepter is the most important ritual object in Vajrayana Buddhism. It symbolizes the method of compassion that, in combination with wisdom (symbolized by the bell), accomplish the transformations necessary for a meditator to attain enlightenment. Vajra literally means "diamond" or "thunderbolt," signifying the crystal-clear, indestructible power of compassion.
