Sake Bottle

Late 18th century
Artist/maker unknown, Japanese
Stencil decoration of pottery was common in eighteenth-century Japan, but its popularity declined in the late Edo period. With the increasing importance of ceramic exports in the Meiji period (1868-1912), stencil decoration began to be produced again in the late nineteenth century. This piece is a good example from the earlier Edo period.
