Dish

c. 1700
Artist/maker unknown, Japanese
The potters of Arita, Japan, began producing porcelain decorated in several overglaze colors around the 1640s; by the end of the seventeenth century, they were producing porcelain with gold and colorful decoration for export as well. This dish, a variant of the fuyode style, is an early example of Arita porcelain decorated in overglaze colors. East Asian floral motifs such as chrysanthemums, peonies, and camellias became very popular in European countries.
