Prince Pratap Singh of Ghanerao

c. 1710
Artist/maker unknown, Indian
Prince Pratap Singh is pictured here in an elegant and leisurely setting. He is surrounded by beautiful women, gardens, and his huqqa, each a privilege of royal pleasure. While the prince is depicted as a unique individual, the women are portrayed in a generalized manner that leaves their identities undefined. The female figures may better be thought of as complements to Pratap Singh’s distinguished image than as true portraits in their own right. Even with their lack of individuality, however, there’s no mistaking their position in the court hierarchy thanks to their finely adorned clothing and jewelry.
