Designs for the Party Lounge

c. 1933
Frederick Kiesler (American (born Austria-Hungary), 1890–1965)
In the 1930s Kiesler designed furniture with modernistic forms, some of which is still being produced today. This drawing appears to be a study for what he called a Party Lounge, created in 1933 for the Mergentime family in New York. Raising the center section of the couch creates different seating positions for several people, while flattening that piece converts it into a bed. Small ink sketches along the right edge of the sheet demonstrate the different options available.
