Galaxy, Black and White Correlate

1959
Frederick Kiesler (American (born Austria-Hungary), 1890–1965)
Kiesler devised a unique approach to artmaking to create a bridge between pictures, the environment, and the viewer. These works were his so-called “Galaxies”—fragments of images grouped together to form a pictorial whole. The separate elements of the Galaxies were sometimes arranged in irregular configurations, but this one forms a rectangle of four conjoined parts. The exposed areas of cardboard around and between the sections indicate that this work was painted after Kiesler mounted the sheets of paper.
