Study for the Head of a Celestial Being

c. Late 17th century
Artist/maker unknown, Indian
The broad underdrawing for this winged celestial being was made in red. A more complete and careful drawing, in black, was then done over the red. The drawing was then corrected using white paint (much like modern Wite Out). Beneath the white, a few changes are still visible. For example, the artist shifted the feather head ornament to the right and altered its shape and style.
