Nigella Pods

2004 (negative); 2005 (print)
Susan Abrams (American, born 1947)
Early in her career, Abrams created sculptural objects with handmade paper; later she tried printing photographs on these three-dimensional pieces. More recently she has concentrated on the interactions between the photographic image and flat, handmade paper of various fibers and textures. Her subjects are typically drawn from nature, often from her own garden and collection of dried leaves and seeds. These are portraits of plants, in a sense, activated by her composition and the organic, fibrous nature of the paper on which she prints them.
