Jacques Villon (Gaston Duchamp) (French, 1875–1963)

This work pays homage to Jacques Villon’s younger brother Raymond Duchamp-Villon, who died tragically during World War I at the age of forty-two. Shortly after Raymond’s death, Jacques began to explore the bold simplification of his brother’s pioneering modern sculpture in a group of paintings, drawings, and prints. In this still life painting, Jacques colorfully illustrates a group of his brother’s sculptures—Baudelaire (1911), Dog (1913), and The Horse (1914)—all of which are in the Museum’s permanent collection.
