Carol Taback (American, 1941–1980)

When Carol Taback began making photographs, she used the photo booth in the Woolworth store in Center City Philadelphia. She liked the long strips of images so much that she soon purchased a photo booth for her own art studio. She arranged her strips of pictures into large grids, creating complex, repeating patterns. From far away, the small individual pictures are hard to see, so the pattern of photo-booth strips looks almost decorative or abstract. Stand closer and the pictures reappear, showing us rows of short, personal stories about the artist and her relationships with her family members.
