Mary and Elizabeth

1929
Käthe Kollwitz (German, 1867–1945)
Käthe Kollwitz carved into soft wood with tools including a file to create a vibrating mark that plays against the rippled effect of the visible grain. In this depiction of a moment of greeting, physical forms and space meld together within multiple frames. There is one border suggested by the dark expanse of ink and a second marked in traces left by the remnants of the carved block.
