Complete Detailed View of Yokohama Main Street and the Miyozaki Quarter

1860
Utagawa Sadahide (Japanese, c. 1807–1873) Published by Yamamotoya Heikichi
In this view an American flag flies prominently in the lower right corner, above the foreigners' district. Within the walled compounds warehouses, sheds, and residential buildings can be distinguished, along with servants attending animals kept for food. At right, small boats sail to and from one of the stone piers piled high with commercial goods, loading and offloading for larger ships docked further out in the bay. In the Miyozaki quarter at left, courtesans stroll in the gardens outside the establishments where they live and work. Red labels identify the various tea houses and other locations throughout the city.
