Decanter and Stopper

c. 1760
Artist/maker unknown, English
Punch was introduced into England in the seventeenth century. At that time, the drink consisted of arrack—a strong alcoholic beverage of the Middle East distilled from rice or molasses—mixed with water, lemon juice, sugar, and spices. The name probably derives from the Hindu word pànch, which means five, presumably referring to the number of ingredients. This decanter would have originally had a stopper.
