Tankard

1772-1773
Workshop of William Grundy (English (active London), active 1743–1779)
This tankard bears a crest added many years after it was made, that of Sir William Herschel (1833-1918). Herschel, the descendant of a line of distinguished astronomers, including Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel (1738-1822) who discovered the planet Uranus, is credited with being the first European to recognize that fingerprints are unique to each person.
