Workshop of Maestro Simone da Colonello (Italian (Castel Durante), active second half 16th century)
This spectacular jar is from a set, one of which bears the maker’s signature “Maestro Simono.” The bold decorative motifs of fantastic figures on colored backgrounds are known as grotesques, a fanciful language of ornament inspired by ancient Roman wall painting.
