Spouted Drug Jar, with Seated Queen (Molded Mask with Snake Handle)

c. 1565-1571
Probably workshop of Orazio Fontana (Italian (active Urbino), c. 1510–1571)
This jar belongs to the most elaborate set produced in Urbino. The seated queen motif has not been explained, although it is logical to connect the figure with a commission from a female ruler. The decorative scheme is exceptional, including a label with a pair of putti, large flanking trees, and a landscape that wraps around each jar.
