Valley of Oaxaca

1888
José Maria Velasco (Mexican, 1840–1912)
Across North America, from Mexico to Canada, artists celebrated the history and beauty of their national landscapes. Here, Velasco paints the topography, ancient ruins, local costumes, and native cacti of his country. His award-winning pictures appeared alongside similar landscape paintings from the United States at Chicago’s 1893 Columbian Exposition and other international art shows.
