Painting (Fratellini)

1927
Joan Miró (Spanish, 1893–1983)
This painting is a witty homage to the comic and grotesque performances of the Fratellini brothers, acrobatic circus clowns whom Miró would have seen performing in Paris in the 1920s. The shapeless forms and brilliant colors mirror the clowns’ made-up faces and contrast with the minimal imagery of the largely raw canvases he painted the same year. All three works feature barely legible motifs derived from the body and nature.
