Drug Jar (Albarello)

c. 1500-1525
Artist/maker unknown, Italian
Imported Spanish pottery had significant influence on the decoration of Italian wares, but by the early sixteenth century maiolica painters made use of even more diverse sources. The designs on this jar were informed by examples of blue and white ceramics from the Middle East and China, brought to Italy through sophisticated trade networks.
