Lorenzo Bonechi (Italian, 1955–1994)

Bonechi's work is infused with a poignant awareness of his own rural region in Tuscany near Florence, and his imagery directly reflects that of his local Medieval and Renaissance predecessors such as Duccio, Giotto, Masaccio, and Fra Angelico. In this enormous drawing, the circle divided into quadrants walked by four isolated figures may refer to the face of a clock, with the young men, each cast in his own reveries and ignoring the others, pacing out the progress of time.
