Deep Dish

Late 18th century
Artist/maker unknown, Chinese, for export to the American market
This deep dish was one of an assortment of Chinese export samples that Philadelphia Merchant Samuel Howell, Jr. (c. 1748-1902) kept on hand to show customers the patterns available for purchase. Each piece bears a number that designates a pattern, by which Howell communicated a customer's choice to his agent in China.
