Pine, Bamboo, and Plum with Sparrow

Late 17th - early 18th century
Kano Tsunenobu (Japanese, 1636–1713)
Screens made in a smaller size, as the one seen here, were used in tearooms. In East Asian countries, pine, bamboo, and plum are called the "Three Friends of Winter" and symbolize a noble and tenacious spirit, because pine and bamboo leaves are evergreen and plum trees bloom in winter.
