Limestone Circle

1985
Richard Long (English, born 1945)
In the 1960s, Richard Long became a pioneer of land art, which sought to make art out of nature. For some of his pieces he took long hikes, making site-specific sculpture from found materials along the way and documenting his journeys with drawings and photographs. Limestone Circle, which was executed in the mid-1980s, continues this engagement with natural materials. Similar works by Long were included in seminal exhibitions of the 1960s and 1970s, in which he participated with physical works and ephemeral performances. The directness of Limestone Circle greatly resonates with works of this time period.
