View of the Old Fish Market in Venice

c. 1720-1730
Canaletto (Giovanni Antonio Canal) (Italian (active Venice, Rome, and England), 1697–1768)
Canaletto's views of Venice are legendary, as he was one of the primary view painters in Europe in the eighteenth century, and Venice was a perennially popular subject. This free sketch was presumably drawn on location from one of the banks of the Grand Canal looking west, showing a bit of the Piazzetta San Marco, the Libreria Sansoviniana, and, in the distance, the dome of the church of Santa Maria della Salute.
