Seaform Set

1982
Dale Chihuly (American, born 1941)
Reminiscent of sea life and seashells, Seaform Set implies movement with its undulating shapes, as if caught in a current. Chihuly, in collaboration with Americans Benjamin Moore and Richard Royal (both born in 1952), introduced ribbed optical molds into his practice in the Seaform series. These molds shaped the glass but also provided an added benefit of strength that enabled it to be blown very thin. At this time Chihuly was intent on pushing the limits of the glassblowing process and focused himself and his collaborators on three elements central to his work: “fire, gravity, and spontaneity.”
