George Nelson Associates was one of a number of American design firms that during and following World War II experimented with technologies that had been developed for wartime purposes. In the design of the lamps in the Bubble series, the firm used a spray-on plastic known as Cocoon that had been used as a protective coating for battleships and other types of military equipment in storage.
