Tani Bunchō (Japanese, 1763–1840)

Tani Bunchö was the leading painter of the Japanese literati style in Edo (now Tokyo), carrying the tradition into the nineteenth century. He often painted for the Tokugawa Sadanobu, the shogunal ruler of Japan from 1787 to 1793. In 1795, Bunchö was commissioned by the shogun to undertake a survey of the country's artistic treasures, a project that took almost four years. This lyrical landscape is believed to have been painted around this time.
