Mahavira Carried on a Chariot While Many Sing His Praises

c. 1450
Artist/maker unknown, Indian
Shown here on his way to renounce his princely life and possessions, the jina Mahavira is carried by the gods in a golden chariot. Still sumptuously garbed, his progress is heralded by musicians and hymns of praise. "Victory . . . oh Lord . . . Establish religion and order for the well-being of all living beings. . . ."
