Lion Dancer, Flutist, and Boy

Late 18th - early 19th century
Artist/maker unknown, Japanese
In Japan traditional New Year’s celebrations feature lion dancing, accompanied with cheerful folk music as part of a demon-expelling ritual. Like the one depicted here, the main dancers wear lion masks and costumes while playing instruments, such as drums and bells. They perform on the streets, usually from house to house, bringing protection and festivity to the entire village.
