Vibhasa Ragini (A Couple in the Morning Light)

c. 1725-1750
Artist/maker unknown, Indian
Like other illustrated series made in India, ragamalas were stored as loose sheets of paper, rather than stitched together like a book. This illustration of Vibhasa Ragini comes from a now-dispersed set. Here Vibhasa Ragini is imagined as courtly lovers awakened by a crowing rooster, an embodiment of love fulfilled. This illustration provides only a glimpse into the world of the ragamala; the complete set of ragas would have included vivid evocations of a wide range of emotions.
