Rabindranath Tagore (Indian (eastern India, Calcutta), 1861–1941)

A Nobel Laureate in literature, Rabindranath Tagore had always doodled in the margins of his manuscripts, but did not begin creating separate drawings and paintings until the 1920s. In his last years he exhibited these works across Europe and the United States--including Philadelphia--to provide funds for Visva Bharati, his experimental university at Santiniketan, in rural Bengal. The art historian Stella Kramrisch (1896-1993) began her teaching career at Santiniketan and Calcutta University before coming to the University of Pennsylvania. She acquired seven of Tagore's paintings, which she gave to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where she was curator of Indian art from 1954 until her death in 1993.
