Long Shawl

c. 1870-1880
Artist/maker unknown, French?
In this fine European example from the late nineteenth century typical shawl motifs have become so stylized that they are barely recognizable. The design seen here, which is organized around a lyre shape, effectively blends European, Indo-Persian, and Asian decorative elements. These include peacock feathers, aigrettes, and the flame motif. This display shows a fashionable arrangement for a shawl in the mid-nineteenth century.
