Charles Demuth (American, 1883–1935)

This painting by Charles Demuth conveys atmospheric vitality with dynamic, substantial strokes of green, orange, and pink. Sunlight catches the trunk of the slender tree at center while a crooked shadow covers the dense foliage in the distance. Demuth, who was born in Lancaster, not far from Philadelphia, made this image early in his career, during the period when he trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under instructors such as Henry McCarter and Hugh Breckenridge. As is often the case with student work, Trees hardly resembles the artist’s mature production, which comprises both hard-edged landscape and architectural subjects and sparkling watercolor vignettes.
