Preparatory Drawing for "The Railroad" (Etching)

Here, Hopper uses layers of smudged black crayon to convey the lengthening shadows of the late afternoon. White chalk is employed to designate areas needing to be highlighted (on the shirt sleeve and train tracks) or deleted (trees and houses in the background).
