Though the Arita technique for manufacturing porcelain was kept in strict secrecy, Seto and other areas in Japan also began to produce porcelain in the early nineteenth century. Seto potters in particular found success manufacturing fine sometsuke (underglaze blue) works, which were often exported to the European market.
