Religious Text

August 19, 1801
The Reverend Georg Geistweit (American, active c. 1790–1820)
This work was created by a traveling minister of the German Reformed Church in rural Pennsylvania. In addition to serving a religious function, such illuminated bible texts were used as writing samples for the instruction of children. This work includes a quotation from Psalm 34, which begins, "I will bless the Lord at all times." The decorative borders were inspired by medieval illuminated manuscripts and are interspersed with figures of men, chickens, dogs, lions, unicorns, and peacocks.
