Tapestry showing June: Sheep Shearing

Mid- 18th century
Woven at the Gobelins tapestry manufactory, Paris (1662–present) , in the workshop of Michel Audran (French, 1701–1771)
This scene is one in a series of twelve tapestries called The Months of Lucas, depicting activities corresponding to the months of the year. This sheep shearing scene represents the month of June, and is an eighteenth-century French adaptation of a sixteenth-century Brussels tapestry in the first Months of Lucas series once attributed to Lucas van Leyden. In this version, not only is the border different from the sixteenth-century original, but the scene is wider with the addition of figures on the sides. Additionally, the proportions of the figures are in the more elegant eighteenth-century style.
